How we teach

Three threads run through every class.

Each class is built on the same foundations, so a student grows in recitation, understanding and character together.

Qur’an recitation

Every lesson begins with the Qur’an. Each student reads one page in turn, and facilitators correct her gently. Students who have not memorised the Qur’an are given a Qur’an facilitator, and those who have are encouraged to keep revising.

Islamic sciences through classical texts

Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, creed, supplications and the Prophet’s biography are studied from trusted classical texts. The Center’s aim is that students can read, understand and reflect on the Qur’an and Islamic sources with confidence.

Arabic with clear explanation

Texts are studied in Arabic. The facilitator explains them in Arabic, Hausa, English or another language of the class, so that no student is left behind.

A typical class

How a live session runs.

Classes meet live on WhatsApp, with Google Meet used for workshops and special sessions. Each class has its own group, managed by the administration and a facilitator or supervisor.

  1. Join

Your Class Prefect posts the call link a few hours before class. Join from a quiet place with your microphone muted.

  2. Open and recite

The facilitator opens with praise of Allah and salutations on the Prophet. Each student then reads one page of the Qur’an in turn.

  3. Learn

The facilitator teaches the lesson, with the text shared in the group so you can follow along. Ask questions politely, beginning with “Aḥsana Allāhu ilayk”.

  4. Summarise and close

A short summary and the next assignment are shared, and the class ends with the closing du‘ā. If the network fails, the class is held as a direct conference call.

Every class also has one special revision day, set by the Academic Committee, to go over what has been taught.

Academic calendar

Three terms, following the Hijri calendar.

There are no holidays during the terms. Examinations are held one week before each break.

TermBeginsEndsBreak after
Term 1Two weeks after Eid al-Adha (in Dhul Hijjah)Around Jumada al-UlaTwo weeks
Term 2After the two-week breakRight before RamadanUntil two weeks after Ramadan
Term 3Two weeks after RamadanBefore Dhul HijjahThe new year begins

A student who completes a class moves to the next class when the year ends. The administration announces exact term dates.

Progress

Assessment and promotion.

Progress is assessed through continuous assessment (assignments, recitation, class participation and short tests) and an examination in each subject, which may be written, oral or audio-based.

50%

Pass mark

The pass mark in each subject, unless the Academic Committee announces otherwise.

75%

Attendance

Students should attend at least 75% of classes in a term to be eligible for promotion, unless excused for a good reason.

Promotion

Decided by the Academic Committee from results, attendance and conduct. A student who needs more time may repeat a class or receive extra support.

Recognition

Students who perform extraordinarily in class are given books as a reward. Certificates are not issued after examinations.

Class placement

You don’t have to choose your class.

New students are placed by the administration and the Academic Committee after an admissions interview, so you begin at the class that fits what you already know.
